The Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) clinical variation known as tomato flu, which was initially detected in India on May 6 in Keralas Kollam district, has now spread to three more states: Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Odisha.

The Union Health Ministry stated that as of July 26, the Kollam district of Kerela had 82 confirmed cases of tomato flu in children under five. Additionally, a senior official of the Regional Medical Research Center in Bhubaneswar stated that 26 youngsters (ages 1 to 9) in Odisha had the infection.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention warned all states due to the increased number of cases, stating that the primary symptoms seen in children with tomato flu are similar to those of other viral illnesses and include fever, rashes, and joint discomfort. The initial symptoms are mild fever, low appetite, lethargy, and frequent sore throat. Small red spots appear one or two days after the fever starts, quickly developing into blisters and ulcers. The tongue, gums, inside of the cheeks, palms, and soles are the specific sites for the sores.

Diagnosis of tomato flu is conducted after the molecular and serological tests for dengue, chikungunya, zika virus, varicella-zoster virus, and herpes come negative.(ETHealthWorld, August 24, 2022)
